アイダホ州ボイジーで育ち、スキー競技と並行して自転車を始めた。ヨーロッパへの道は容易ではなく、育成チームの採用を逃した後も独力で切り拓き、2020年にモビスターへ20歳で加入した。同チームでは栄養管理からトレーニングキャンプの手配まで全て自力でこなし、2023年には年俸のほぼ全額を自費トレーニングへ注ぎ込んだとX上で明かしている。2024年のヴィスマ移籍後はチームの計画に全てを委ね、パリ〜ニースで18年ぶりのアメリカ人優勝を達成——「計画に身を委ねたら、自分の人生が返ってきた」と語った。
