オランダ・ヘルデルラント州のデイル出身。幼少期からシクロクロスに熱中し、ジュニア世代までにオランダ全国タイトルを5度制した。ロードレースへ転向後も山岳での粘り強い走りを武器に、2022年のブエルタ・ア・エスパーニャ第15ステージで標高2500メートルを超えるシエラネバダの頂上にグランツール初勝利を刻んだ。2025年には「結局、自転車は人生の脇役にすぎない」という境地に達し、力みの抜けた走りでツール・ド・フランスの2ステージを制した。
