1965年、プロ1年目のジモンディはツール・ド・フランスに出る予定ではなかった。スタート直前にチームメイトの欠場で呼ばれ、母に出場の許しを求めてから出発した。第3ステージで総合首位の黄色いジャージを着た。落車したエースをチームで待つうちに一度手放したが、数日後に取り戻した。モン・ヴァントゥの登りでは地元フランスのレイモン・プリドールに食い下がった。最終日の個人タイムトライアルを勝ち、22歳でツールを制した。許しをくれた母はその日、夫ともう一人の息子と村の食堂のテレビでジモンディの走りを見ていた。
