1987年のジロ・デ・イタリアで、チームが勝たせるつもりだったのは前年王者のロベルト・ヴィセンティーニだった。ロッシュは首位の同僚を置いて下りで抜け出し、その座を奪った。本人は20年後、「ロベルトにアタックしたと言うのは正しくない。人生で最高の下りのひとつを走って、彼がついて来られなかっただけだ」と振り返った。観客の一部に米粒や赤ワインを吐きかけられながら、ジロを勝った。ツールでは山頂ゴールで首位のペドロ・デルガドの4秒後ろまで迫り、直後に倒れて酸素マスクを着けられた。終盤のタイムトライアルで逆転して勝ち、9月に世界王者になった。同じ年に3つ勝ったのは、エディ・メルクスに次いで2人目だった。
