この選手を知る — 首位で降りたブエルタを、翌年に勝った

1987年のブエルタ・ア・エスパーニャで、ケリーは首位に立った。最終日まであと数日だった。勝てばアイルランド人初のグランツール王者になる。だがサドルが当たる所にできたおできを、ライバルに隠して走っていた。首位に立った翌日のステージで痛みに耐えられず、14km走ったところで自転車を降りた。同じ年、その「初めて」は同国人のステファン・ロッシュがジロで手にした。本人は「降りるしかなかったのは本当に残念で、だから1988年は自分にとって大事だった」と振り返る。翌年は最終日前日の個人タイムトライアルで、首位の選手より2分近く速く走って逆転した。降りたレースで、ただ一度のグランツール総合優勝を手にした。
