2002年のジロでは、肩を骨折しても走り、総合2位に入った。痛みに食いしばった歯を11本治療した。翌年のツールでは第1ステージの集団落車で鎖骨を折ったまま走り、第16ステージで100km近く独りで逃げて勝った。ゴールで彼を抱きしめたのは、かつて山で支えたエース、ランス・アームストロングだった。2004年、アテネ五輪の個人タイムトライアルで金メダルを取った翌月のブエルタで、他人の血が混じっていると判定され、2年の出場停止を受けた。2011年、自分とアームストロングのドーピングを明かし、金メダルは翌年取り消された。その内幕を書いた本の第1章は、「僕は、苦痛に耐えるのが得意だ。」という一文で始まる。
