この選手を知る — 引退レースは、生まれた街で勝った

1980年、ベルギーのヘントで生まれた。父はオーストラリア人のトラック選手で、息子が2歳のときに家を出た。母とロンドンのキルバーンへ移り、12歳で自転車競技に夢中になった。トラック競技で世界王者になり、五輪の金メダルは通算5個を数える。2012年、アシストのクリス・フルームに支えられ、英国人で初めてツール・ド・フランスを総合優勝した。2015年には、1時間で走る距離の世界記録を54.526kmに伸ばした。最後のレースは2016年11月、生まれた街のヘント6日間だった。父もかつて走ったこのレースを、マーク・カヴェンディッシュと組んで勝った。「ここにいると、いつも父のことを考える」と話した。
