1995年、イングランドのレヴェンズ生まれ。少年時代は陸上、それも山を走るフェルランニングに打ち込み、自転車は兄ジョニーが先に始めた。父に勧められて本気で乗るようになった。「僕は小さくて怖いもの知らずだった。だから父は、上りのほうが好きだろうと考えた」と笑う。進学せずにイタリアのアマチュアチームへ渡った。2019年のブエルタ第20ステージは、前日の落車の包帯姿で走った。同室で元世界王者のフィリップ・ジルベールが彼のジレを脱がせて自分のジャージにしまい、ゴールまで付き添った。本人は「自転車であれほど苦しんだことはない」と語った。この日の遅れで総合トップ10から落ち、10位まで21秒届かなかった。
